Who is Sanford Meisner?
Sanford Meisner was born August 31, 1905 in Brooklyn to Jewish immigrants from Hungary. Upon graduation from high school, he studied to become a concert pianist at the music institute later renamed Juilliard School. He left there in the 1930s to work in the family garment business.
Also interested in acting, he was hired as an extra by the Theatre Guild of Acting in New York City for the play They Knew What They Wanted. He was awarded a scholarship to the Theatre Guild of Acting, and in 1931 he and twenty seven other actors were chosen to form Group Theatre.
He worked with actor, director, and teacher Lee Strasberg who created method acting. To achieve more realistic performances, he taught actors to draw emotions from personal experiences similar to the character being played. Stella Adler whom he also worked with believed that using one's imagination would summon the emotions needed to play the character. Meisner agreed more with Stella's views than those of Strasberg and told him so.
When Group Theatre disbanded in 1940, Meisner stayed at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York to head the acting program and devise the Meisner technique. In 1947, he also taught at the Actor's Studio and later became the artistic director. At this time, he was briefly married to Peggy Meredith from 1948 to 1950.
In 1983 he and long time companion James Carville founded the Meisner/Carville School of Acting in Bequia in the Caribbean. Another school was opened in North Hollywood, California in 1985. He split his time between these schools and the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. Sanford Meisner died in his sleep on February 2, 1997 in Sherman Oaks, California.
The Meisner technique uses real human emotions and reactions from spontaneous responses to play characters. He taught this by having the actor wait to say his line until he was pinched or poked. Another method was two actors repeating a line back and forth until the meaning changed on its own.
